What is Digital Led?
Each digital led has its own driver IC and with two data pins. There are four pins in one Digital LED, two for data and two for power. Digital LED receive data from controller IC and passing the data to the next Digital LED in the same series and using the power in parallel. Other regular LEDs do not have data pin(s) and using power connection in series or scanning.
Why Digital Led?
Digital LEDs are perfect fit for using multiple RGB LEDs at the same time. By using Digtal LEDs, the electronic engineer is able to save lots of time on PCB layout and using less ICs.
Tranditional RGB LED has 4 pins, one for common cathod/anode and using other 3 pins to make circuits for R, G, and B color. It will not be an issue while using few LEDs, but the more LEDs used the more difficult of putting those LEDs on a PCB; circuits routing will become an issue. Another common senario about using multiple RGB LEDs is scanning. Besides the complication of routing, scanning is often used to light up different colors between RGBs LEDs. Depending on the scanning frequency, sometimes the LEDs look like blinking.
Lumex Digital LEDs easily resolve those two common limitation by built-in driver IC and non-scanning emission means the status will remain until receive next data.
How to use Digital LEDs?
Putting Digital LEDs into practice is different than tranditional R/G/B LEDs. At the very beginning, the circuits are different. There are two data pins for receiving data and passing data to the next LED(s) and two power pins for cathod and anode. Please keep this in mind, Digital LEDs are using the power in parallel; in another term, the current is accumulated. Here is a quick calculation: 1A for 66 Digital LEDs' max usage.
The next step of using Digital LEDs is sending data to tell Digital LEDs lighting up. THe control signal is straight forward by sending 24 bits data in sequence.
